Strategic Thinking
During 1998, MLC staff and Executive Board embarked on a process to identify the strategic areas and issues that would most affect MLC in the next several years. Rather than produce a traditional strategic report and focusing on strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities, the Board decided to work through a process of scenario building. This process was designed to change the way staff and Board members think about the future and MLC's activities.
The process began with an examination of MLC's core values and its strategic purposes. These are the bedrock principles upon which we will build all of our activities and programs.
MLC's Core Values
- Maintaining our integrity, creating and sharing trust, and practicing ethical behavior.
- Quality and excellence in our products and our services.
- Adding value through cooperation (in all ways including economic, facilitation, technology, citizenship, service, and leadership).
- Leadership and innovation within the Michigan library community.
- Encourage individual growth through an open and participative work environment.
MLC's Strategic Purposes
- Helping librarians in the State of Michigan fulfill the information needs of their patrons and users through the use of information technology.
- Bringing the resources of individual libraries together in order to maximize their impact, provide cost and time benefits, and make the availability of professional knowledge and expertise accessible and affordable.
- To build, serve, and provide leadership to the statewide library community.
- To improve the overall level of library service in the state through the use of information technology.
- Keeping libraries relevant through the coordination of information and activities, seeking out the best products and services, and presenting it in a user-friendly format.
- Serving an educational role; providing training, gathering and distributing information, and ensuring that MLC's offerings and benefits are well known and understood.
