Suspending a hold
The following explains how staff can suspend holds via the staff client. For information on how patrons can suspend holds from their online accounts - see: suspend a hold via the OPAC.
When the hold is created
A hold can be suspended immediately upon creation.
Search for the item that is to be held.
Click on the Place Hold link.
Enter in a patron/user barcode in the Enter recipient barcode field. Click on Submit.
The Create/Edit a Hold screen will display. Notice that Contact telephone number (for this particular hold), Enable phone notifications for this hold and Enable email notifications for this hold, Pickup location and Expiration date can all be customized.
To suspend the hold, check the box to the right of Suspend this hold (Help). [Note: if you click on the Help link, a box will pop up with the message: "A suspended hold will retain its place in the queue but will not be fulfilled until it has been activated."]
A new row - Automatically activate hold on: will display. You have the option on entering in a date manually or if you click in that box, a calendar widget will pop up allowing you to pick a date from the calendar. Choose a date. [Note: if you don't pick a date, the hold can be suspended indefinitely until the reactivation date is set at another time.]
Click on Place Hold.
From the patron account
Click on the Holds button.
To view any inactive holds, make sure that the Active? column is visible. You can add the column by clicking on the column picker on the far right of the column headings and selecting Active?.
Right click on an active hold and select Suspend Hold. Alternately, you can suspend the hold by clicking on it, clicking on the Actions for Selected Holds and selecting Suspend Hold.
The system will send the message: "Are you sure you would like to suspend hold ..." Click on Yes.
The screen will refresh and notice under the Active column, the newly suspended hold displays No.
From the bibliographic record
Retrieve the record of the item whose hold needs to be suspended.
Click on Actions for this Record and select View Holds.
To view any inactive holds, make sure that the Active? column is visible. You can add the column by clicking on the column picker on the far right of the column headings and selecting Active?.
The holds attached to the record will display. Right click on the hold to be suspended and select Suspend Hold. Alternately, you can click on the hold, click on Actions for Selected Holds and choose Suspend Hold.
The system will send the message: "Are you sure you would like to suspend hold....." Click on Yes.
The screen will refresh and notice under the Active column, the newly suspended hold displays No.
You can suspend multiple holds at a time by selecting the first hold, holding down the Shift key and selecting the last hold to select multiple holds before performing any processes on those holds.
Activating a hold

When the hold is created
A hold's active date can be set immediately upon creation.
Search for the item that is to be held.

Instead of activating a hold immediately, you can set an activation date for the the hold by right clicking on a suspended hold and selecting Edit Activation Date.
A Select Date or Timestamp box will pop up in the upper left. Select the activation date and click on Apply. This will not immediately activate the hold, but it will set a date for when the hold will become active.
The hold will refresh and to view the activation date, use the column picker at the far right of the column headings and select Activation Date.
From the bibliographic record
Retrieve the record of the item whose hold needs to be activated.
Click on Actions for this Record and select View Holds.

From the patron account
Click on the Holds button.
Right click on the hold to be cancelled and select Cancel Hold. Alternately you can click on the hold, click on Actions for Selected Holds and choose Cancel Hold.
A Cancel Hold box will pop up with a drop-down menu requiring you to choose a reason why you are canceling the hold. Choose a reason, add a note if you want in the field below and click on Apply.
The holds will refresh with the canceled hold gone.
From the bibliographic record

From the Browse Holds Shelf
The Browse Holds Shelf view allows you to see all of the items currently on your hold shelf awaiting pick-up from patrons.
Click on the Circulation menu and select Browse Holds Shelf.
The held items available for pick-up will display.
Right click on the hold to be canceled and select Cancel Hold. Alternately you can click on the hold, click on Actions for Selected Holds and choose Cancel Hold.
A Cancel Hold box will pop up with a drop-down menu requiring you to choose a reason why you are canceling the hold. Choose a reason, add a note if you want in the field below and click on Apply.
The holds will refresh with the canceled hold gone.
Now that you have canceled the hold from the holds shelf - if you search for that item, the status will still be On holds shelf. To clear that status, check the item in. That will allow the item to go to reshelving status or if there is another hold, you will be able to print that hold slip and put the item back on the holds shelf for another patron.
