Overlaying records
You will want to overlay records when:
- You find fabulous records (via z39.50) and want to overlay them over not so fabulous records that already exist in the catalog.
- You need to overlay a wonderful full record you found (via z39.50) over a temporary record you previously created.
How to overlay
Retrieve the record that you want to have overlaid. (The not so fabulous or temporary record)
Click on Actions for this Record and select Mark for Overlay.
A box will pop up with the message: "Record with TCN ..... marked for overlay." Click on OK.
If you haven't already, you need to search for the fabulous record using z23.50.
Once you have a fabulous record from z39.50, click on the Hide Top Pane button to get a better view of the MARC record, because I know you want to make sure the record is completely fabulous. [Notice that above the Overlay button the message: "Record with TCN..... marked for overlay."]
Once you have found said record, select the record from the Results area and click on Overlay.
A new tab opens with an editable version of the MARC record. From here, you could edit the record, as long as you are following Michigan Evergreen Cataloging Polices. Once you are ready to overlay, click on the Overlay Record button.
The not so fabulous MARC record will open in a new window. This gives you a chance to view the records side by side to make sure you are overlaying the correct record. Click on Overlay.
The system will send a message: “Record successfully overlaid.” Click on OK.
The screen will refresh to display the fabulous record. Any holdings attached to the previous record will be attached to the full record that was overlaid. Additional holdings can be added as well.
